My Slide About Elephants
Tuesday, 23 May 2017
Yesterday we all made online diagrams of something that we chose.
I chose to make my digital diagram on a rose, because I really like roses and I did a lot of work on Botany last year at Primary school. I really enjoyed making my diagram and choosing different parts of images off google to make into a static picture. It was really fun making my diagram and I really want to make another one sometime.
The main features of a diagram are: the image, labels and a title (subtitle.) I was really pleased with the outcome of my diagram and I must admit that I have never made an online diagram before so this was a new and awesome experience for me.

Reflection of Week 3 Homelearning
Reflection of Week 3 Homelearning
I must admit that I have never pitched a tent by myself. There has always been my dad or grandpa to help me out.
I wasn’t exactly going very well at the beginning but I soon got the hang of it. (Kind of.)
My tent is very embarrassing. I have had it since I was about five or six and it is our only currently functioning tent. (Except for my dad’s tent which is really old and dirty.)
I kept trying to throw the cover over the top of the tent but I couldn’t quite do it. (Mum said it was very funny to watch. I wasn’t exactly entertained.) Eventually I managed to haul the cover over the tent and pin it down.
The ground was very soft because of all the rain we have been having, so it was easy to get the tent pegs into the earth.
I decided to leave the tent up overnight to see if it would stay up. I was a bit worried that it wouldn’t because we had a lot of wind last night but when I got this up my tent was still firmly in the ground. PHEW!

Room 10 Tech Challenge, The Leaning Tower of Pasta
Yesterday after lunch, room 10 were given a difficult tech challenge which was to make a tower of raw pasta and marshmallows.
I am celiac, which means that I can't eat or touch any gluten. This was a bit of a problem because both materials we were working with had gluten in them.
I wished I could help Adam, Blake and Luca construct the tower, but I couldn't touch the pasta or marshmallows because of gluten.
My team's plans were really good but very in depth and complicated. We found it hard to create our tower in only 20 minutes, by the time the stopwatch went off, we had only just finished the foundations.
I would have enjoyed the challenge much more if I could have helped construct it. It must have been harder for my team with only three people instead of four.

Passion Projects Part 2
I loved doing Passion Projects. It was really cool being able to involve my violin in school work.
I did my best to be innovative in the short time we had to create a product.
I got a bit nervous before I did my presentation but as soon as I got up there in front of the class, I kind of took off.

My Dictionary
Colon = : meaning a symbol used at the beginning of a list or to expand a sentence without a full stop.
E.g. Camp Gear List:
Rain jacket …
E.g. My favourite things to do after school are: read books, listen to music, hang out with friends.
It isn’t always necessary to use a colon when listing things, sometimes a comma will do the same thing.
E.g. My favourite foods are, ice cream, nachos and grapes.
Hyphen = - a symbol used to join two words/names together.
E.g. Matter-of-factly. Father-in-law.
E.g. Millie Seirs-Low. Jake Richmond-Lawrence.
Tip: The plural of hyphen is ‘hyphenated.’ Which means that the word in use has a hyphen between another word and itself.
E.g. So if you are dictating a sentence to someone and the sentence had a hyphen in it, you wouldn’t say “hyphen there”, you would say something along the lines of “that word is hyphenated.”
Ellipsis = … a symbol which means ‘to carry on an unfinished sentence’. The ellipsis is generally used in speech more than punctuation, but when writing stories and/or any other pieces of writing, the ellipsis is written to indicate an unfinished sentence or paragraph.
Dialogue example: “Watch out or I will, will…”
Text example: Until the very end…
Tip: As a general rule, the ellipsis should be no longer than three dots, so ……… would be incorrect.
Question Mark = ? The question mark indicates that someone is asking a question. Usually used in books if a character doesn’t know something and/or wants to find out something.
E.g. “What are you doing after school today?”
E.g. “I don’t understand, can you please help me?”
Quotation Mark = “_” The quotation mark(s), aka speech marks symbolise speech; someone talking.
E.g. “Hello, my name is Laura”, the girl told him.
E.g. “What is an ellipsis?” the teacher asked Jo.
Tip: It is necessary to use a comma at the end of the speaking sentence.
E.g. “It is great to see you”, said Leo to Jake. (Correct)
E.g. “You too” replied Jake. (Incorrect)
You do not need to use a comma if you have another punctuation mark at the end of the sentence.
E.g. “Can you come over to my house this afternoon?”
Exclamation Mark =! a mark that indicates someone exclaiming something.
E.g. “Merry Christmas!” or, “I can’t believe it!”
Tip = You can use the exclamation mark more than once at the end of a sentence. Generally only use more than one ! if the character/narrator is really REALLY exclaiming something.
E.g. “I can’t believe it!!!”
Fullstop = . The full stop symbolises the end of a sentence or paragraph.
E.g. So I trudged home.
E.g. We had been best friends since we were very, very young.
Parentheses (Brackets) = (_) Brackets aka parentheses are used to include back-up information about the subject in question.
E.g. The boy glared at me (it seems strange, but somehow I seemed to recognise him and his seething glare.)
E.g. I looked at the birthday cake (of which the icing was unhealthily blue.)
Slashes = / lines that combine similar meanings together without using the word and.
E.g. Please do not bring food/drink into the auditorium.
E.g. You may read and/or write.
Comma = , a mark that symbolises a breath or short pause.
E.g. I walked to school, it was freezing.
E.g. The colours of the t-shirts were black, yellow and green.
Tip = If listing a product, you do not need to use a comma after and.
Semi-Colon = ; a longer pause than a comma but not a full stop.
E.g. “I am exhausted”, wheezed Annie; she took a deep breath and continued to run along the cross-country track.
E.g. Come on! I told myself, I can do this; I walked into the office.
Apostrophe = ‘ a mark that is used to indicate that something belongs to someone or, if using old fashioned language which often takes out some letters in words to show pronunciation.
E.g. It was Gemma’s.
E.g The bird flew o’er the trees.

LIEUTENANT!
LIEUTENANT!!!
“Lieutenant! Lieutenant!”
I twisted my head round to see who was calling.
“Help me Lieutenant, you have to help me!”
A dowdy man with greasy black hair sank to his knees before me.
“What is it?’I asked, concerned.
“It is my friend, he is dying”, the man whispered.
“Who are you?”
“I am Alec Campbell”.
“Take me to the patient”,I said.
I was lead through a damp tunnel teeming with rats and into a dark hole in the side of the trench. It smelt horrible and musty, like caked mud and gunpowder. The hole was pitch black so I could see no-one.*
“Hello?”I whispered urgently.”Look I’m really sorry but I can’t stay long, I have duties to carry out”.
I was answered only by a wheezy grunt. As my eyes became accustomed to the darkness, I was able to make out a heap of blankets on the ground and a thin body lay twisted in between them.
“Hello?”I asked again.
There was no answer. Campbell sank to his knees beside the man.
“Please don’t go Josh, please don’t go”.
A siren sounded loud and clear. We all knew what that meant.
“I’m sorry Campbell, We have to go. Drill”.
He nodded but stayed put. Unsure of what to do, I headed outside for roll call.
“Lieutenant!”
It was the General Hutchinson.*
“You are late,”he barked.
“I am sorry General.”
“I don’t have time for your apologies, go!”
I knew I was in trouble. I walked to the firing range where everyone was grouped, waiting for the the dismissal signal. As I joined the line registry line, the rest of the lieutenants sniggered at me.
“Fancy being late for roll call’, someone jeered at me.
I bit my lip. Suddenly, something exploded.
Gunfire.
“Evacuate the premises!”General Hutchinson yelled.*
No one heard him. Soldiers ran in every direction, hectically trying to escape the Turkish gunfire.
I knew what to do.I had been trained to take charge in battles, long hours I had spent practising for an event like this.
“Everybody, take to the trenches immediately. Hurry!”
I blew my whistle and rounded up the soldiers who were all acting like terrified sheep. They followed me. I led them through the burning Flanders Field and down into the only entrance to the trenches.
After that, the panic receded and everyone calmed down a bit.*
****
Everything was aflame.
Dying men screamed.
I had only one purpose, and that was to find Campbell and Josh. I meandered through the mud covered trenches and eventually found what I was looking for.
Campbell was exactly where I had left him, but the atmosphere in his trench-hole was different. Brighter, livelier somehow.
Then I noticed why.
The soldier, Josh, who had been so affected by profound sickness, was sitting up and talking.
“Hello Lieutenant, I am grateful for the time you devoted to me,”he said without hesitation.
I was amazed. It was a miracle. How could a man so ill become so much better in such a short amount of time?
****
While the battle raged on outside, a young Lieutenant and two soldiers sat together and celebrated the recovery of a soldier who had been doomed to die from plague, but had recovered, and till this day, no one knows how.
I really enjoyed Measurement Learning last term. I feel like I learnt a lot about squares and cubes as well as volume and capacity.
I found volume and capacity pretty easy so I challenged myself with some year 9 maths on Maths Buddy. I want to continue learning measurement in my own time.
I love problem solving and Math Buddy is a fantastic tool for maths. I was scoring 100% on year 7 and 8 maths, so it is great to be able to move up levels on Math Buddy.
I learnt all about how to calculate the volume of triangular prisms, using simple formulars from the internet.
I love doing maths at home and am always keen to practice heaps of areas of mathematics at home.
